La Faggeta vetusta dei Monti Cimini, tra le più grandi ed impressionanti dell'Italia centrale, è stata eletta dall'UNESCO Patrimonio dell'Umanità. Parte dalla cima più alta della catena, il monte Cimino che raggiunge l'altezza di 1.053 m s.l.m. ed è il vulcano più antico del Lazio continentale. I numerosi grandi massi tondeggianti che si trovano all'interno del bosco sono il risultato dell'attività vulcanica del Monte di un milione e trecentocinquantamila anni fa. Lo storico romano Livio descrisse la Selva Cimina come “più impenetrabile e più spaventosa … e fino a quel tempo nemmeno l'amor del guadagno aveva potuto determinare nessun mercante a penetrarvi”. In quell'epoca infatti nessuno osava avventurarsi nel fitto bosco, che spaventava non solo i pellegrini e i commercianti ma anche le legioni di Roma, che non vi accedevano neanche per incalzare gli Etruschi durante i combattimenti.
