La fontana del Babuino, così ribattezzata dal popolo romano che, a causa della sua bruttezza, ravvisava nella statua posta sopra la vasca la figura di una scimmia, era in origine una fontana «semipubblica», cioè costruita a spese di un privato, il commerciante ferrarese Alessandro Grandi, ma destinata all'uso pubblico. Tale denominazione divenne ben presto talmente popolare da determinare il cambiamento del nome della strada, aperta da papa Clemente VII Medici (1523-1534), e in suo onore chiamata via Clementina. Realizzata verso il 1576 circa, la fontana era costituita da una vasca di epoca romana in granito grigio - entro cui versava l'acqua una semplice cannella - sulla quale era collocata una statua a grandezza naturale in tufo scolpito raffigurante un Sileno disteso su una scogliera. Alessandro Grandi l'aveva fatta sistemare all'interno di una nicchia sul prospetto principale del suo palazzetto. Il palazzo passò nel Seicento alla famiglia Boncompagni-Ludovisi che nel 1738 provvide alla sua completa ristrutturazione. La fontana allora venne spostata verso sinistra (al civico 49a) e inserita in una incorniciatura analoga alla precedente, delimitata da due lesene e da un architrave decorato da due delfini in travertino. Nel 1877, a causa dei lavori per la costruzione della rete fognaria, la fontana fu smembrata: la statua del Sileno fu collocata nel cortile di palazzo Boncompagni, mentre la vasca andò a sostituire quella dell'abbeveratoio di via Flaminia, davanti alla fontana di Giulio III (1550-1555). Finalmente, nel 1957, il Babuino fu ricomposto nei pressi della sede originaria, ma sul lato opposto della strada, a sinistra della chiesa di Sant'Atanasio dei Greci. La statua del Sileno (antica, ma con testa non pertinente) è stata identificata anche con il dio sabino Sanco Fidio Semicapro. Nella tradizione popolare è entrata a far parte del gruppo delle «statue parlanti» (insieme a Pasquino, Marforio, Madama Lucrezia e Abate Luigi) che costituivano il «congresso degli arguti», su cui erano affisse abitualmente le lamentele anonime dei romani, note come pasquinate.
