Lunedi 12 Agosto. “Essendo partito tardi arrivai alla stazione di Piccadilly verso le 4, mentre cominciava a far buio. Le strade, luccicavano di pioggia e ingombre di traffico e di pedoni frettolosi, davano a Manchester un affascinante aspetto da grande metropoli. Per una ragione del tutto assurda avevo prenotato una stanza in un albergo di lusso, il Piccadilly. La mia camera era all'undicesimo piano, anche se dalla vista sembrava di essere all'ottantacinquesimo. Se mia moglie avesse avuto una potente torcia elettrica, e una propensione ad arrampicarsi sui tetti, sarei riuscito quasi a vederla. Manchester era enorme, un infinita distesa di fiocche luci giallognole e strade zeppe di macchine che si muovevano a rilento....La mattina seguente mi incamminai lungo le strade piovigginose deciso a fissare nella mente qualche aspetto della città, il mio problema con Manchester è che non ne ho un' immagine chiara. Ogni altra grande città britannica possiede qualche caratteristica particolare, un leitmotiv, che mi si imprime nella testa, ma Manchester per me resta perennemente indistinta: un aeroporto con città annessa. Se non sono stato capace di farmi un'idea precisa della città non è però interamente colpa mia. Neanche Manchester sembra avere un idea chiara di se stessa. Il suo motto è “Dar forma oggi alla città di domani”....” Questo è quello che scriveva l'amico Bryson nel suo “Notizie da un isoletta” circa trenta anni fa. Devo dire che effettivamente a distanza di trenta anni le cose sono cambiate e quel dare forma oggi alla città del domani è effettivamente accaduto. Ci sono stato due giorni e due giorni di splendida luce calda ed avvolgente. La sensazione che mi ha suscitato è di una città caotica, una metropoli dove si va di corsa; dove il molto moderno si abbina al poco antico e per antico intendo i ruderi della grande rivoluzione industriale, ciminiere edifici con i caratteristici mattoni rossi e capannoni industriali che lasciano sempre più il passo ad immensi grattacieli. Ne è valsa comunque la pena: ero sempre stato molto incuriosito soprattutto per le sue leggendarie squadre di calcio e per i sui favolosi stadi che ho visitato. Stranamente però girando per le sue vie e per il suo centro con le maglie delle due squadre di calcio rivali nessuno ti ferma, ti fa una battuta, o ti lancia uno sfottò, cosa che invece succede in ogni istante nella vicina e con più personalità Liverpool. Questo per me è stato un bel metro di giudizio; Manchester è una grandissima città finanziaria ricca di migliaiaa di uffici e di sedi legali e di imprese, ma ha perso la sua impronta di città abitata e vissuta dai suoi cittadini. Comunque devo dire che da una forte idea di città molto ricca di tutto ed è piacevole camminare nel suo centro e nel suo immenso centro commerciale. Lo stesso Bryson venti anni dopo nel suo secondo libro “Piccola grande Isola “ affermerà: “Scrissi abbastanza a lungo su Manchester, e da allora ci sono tornato molte volte: sono felice di dichiarare qui, per la cronaca, che nel frattempo è enormemente migliorata. Dovreste andarci di persona; soltanto, non andateci di domenica.” ed è quello che io fatto...niente domenica! Buona visione.
