Lo Stadio dei Marmi fu costruito con solerte rapidità tra il 1928 ed il 1932 e progettato dall'architetto Enrico del Debbio. Costituiva una parte del nucleo primigenio dell'odierno Foro Italico. Insieme ad esso presero forma l'Accademia di Educazione Fisica (poi Isef), lo Stadio dei Cipressi (oggi Stadio Olimpico) e il grande obelisco monolite che funge ancora oggi da punto di ingresso del Foro Italico. Interamente in marmo bianco di Carrara, lo Stadio dei Marmi trae dal candore di quest'ultimo ulteriore severa eleganza. Sessanta colossi di marmo bianco sono disposti a corona intorno allo stadio: richiamano alla mente i possenti colossi dell'antichità. Rappresentano ciascuno un'atleta e ciascuno doveva essere donato da una provincia. Tant'è che sulla base di ogni scultura trovate riportato il nome di quest'ultima. Bisogna dire che la realizzazione delle sessanta statue fu un banco di prova e un'opportunità di lavoro per un numero importante di scultori italiani. A fine 1930 venne bandito un concorso nazionale. Ogni partecipante avrebbe dovuto presentare un bozzetto in gesso di due metri d'altezza. Ne arrivarono 127 da 92 provincie. A passare la selezione furono solo Ercole Drei e Aldo Buttini mentre ad un altro gruppo di artisti venne chiesto di presentare nuovi bozzetti. Tra questi ultimi, vennero poi selezionati Oddo Aliventi, Aroldo Bellini, Tommaso Bertolino, Romeo Gregori e Enrico Martini. Ma il tempo stringeva e ci voleva un'idea. Così si decise di procedere a conferire incarichi ad artisti “noti e indiscussi”. Ad effettuare la loro selezione furono congiuntamente il Sindacato Nazionale degli Artisti e l'Opera Nazionale Balilla che era il committente del Foro Italico. Alle sessanta statue di marmo di Carrara si aggiunsero quattro splendide statue di bronzo. Degne di uno stadio della Grecia Antica, sono opera di Aroldo Bellini. Due sono poste ai lati della tribuna d'onore. Si tratta di due coppie d'atleti impegnati nella Lotta Libera e nella Lotta GrecoRomana. Altre due sono poste in due nicchioni alla base della rampa d'accesso alla pista dello stadio. Rappresentano un atleta con il giavellotto ed un giovane arciere.
