Durante il XVI secolo i paesi della costa ligure, furono oggetto di continui attacchi da parte dei Saraceni,finché non furono sconfitti nella battaglia di Lepanto nel 1571. La Repubblica di Genova decise , per fronteggiare quelle incursioni, di costruire delle torri di avvistamento per dare tempo alle popolazioni di mettersi in salvo. Quella di Laigueglia è l'unica rimasta ancora in buon stato di conservazione.
