Codirosso spazzacamino – Nome scientifico: Phoenicurus ochuros Ordine: Passeriformes Famiglia: Turdidae Nella bella stagione, il Codirosso spazzacamino frequenta prevalentemente aree montane. In Italia, arriva a toccare altitudini fino a 2.600 metri sulle Alpi, ma le popolazioni asiatiche che abitano l'area himalayana si spingono anche fino a 5.000 metri. In passato, la specie abitava solo le zone di montagna, mentre da qualche anno, durante la stagione invernale, preferisce scendere a valle fino alle pianure e nei centri abitati, ambiente a cui il Phoenicurus ochuros si è ormai perfettamente adattato, prediligendo comunque zone meno urbanizzate come piccoli paesi, centri suburbani e aree industriali. Ma è presente anche nelle grandi città dove, nella maggior parte dei casi, colonizza con il proprio nido gli edifici più alti dei centri storici. L'areale di presenza del Codirosso spazzacamino comprende l'Europa, l'Asia minore e il Tibet. Durante lo svernamento, gli individui si spostano dall'Europa settentrionale verso le regioni mediterranee e il Nord Africa. Risulta invece pressoché assente in ampie zone dell'arcipelago Britannico e in Scandinavia. Una delle sottospecie, il Phoenicurus ochuros rufiventris , si spinge a Oriente verso il Mar Caspio e l'Iran, fino a raggiungere la Cina. Il Codirosso spazzacamino si ciba prevalentemente di bacche, invertebrati, insetti catturati in volo – soprattutto mosche e farfalle – e, nelle zone costiere, anche di piccoli crostacei. Di dimensioni simili a quelle di un Passero comune, ha il suo tratto caratteristico nella coda rosso-arancione, che si presenta simile in entrambi i sessi. La sua lunghezza varia tra i 14 e i 16 cm, mentre il peso è di circa 17 grammi. Il dorso del maschio è di colore grigio scuro, mentre il petto, la gola e le guance tendono al nero. Le ali si caratterizzano per una striscia bianca ben visibile nel maschio adulto, assente nella femmina e negli individui più giovani. Becco e zampe sono neri. Il piumaggio della femmina presenta tonalità più smorzate, prevalentemente grigio cenere. Il periodo della riproduzione coincide con il mese di maggio, quando il Codirosso spazzacamino costruisce il proprio nido in fessure di rocce in ambiente montano o nelle crepe e sui cornicioni degli edifici cittadini, più raramente nelle cavità di grossi tronchi. Il nido, a forma di coppa, viene preparato con erbe secche, radici, piume e muschio. La coppia è monogama. La femmina depone dalle 4 alle 7 uova, di colore bianco, particolarmente lisce e lucide. La cova dura circa due settimane ed entrambi i genitori si occupano della cura dei pulcini, che in genere abbandonano il nido a circa un mese dalla nascita.
