La Fontana della Botte si trova a Roma, nel rione Trastevere, precisamente all'angolo tra Via della Cisterna e Via San Francesco a Ripa. Si tratta di una antica fontana, risalente ai primi del Novecento, ma che è ancora in grado di evocare lo spirito e l'atmosfera tipica dei vicoli del noto quartiere romano. La Fontana della Botte, in travertino, viene realizzata nel 1927 su progetto dell'architetto Pietro Lombardi su commissione del Comune di Roma, unitamente ad una serie di altre fontane che avevano il compito di rappresentare i diversi rioni del centro storico di Roma (si tratta di un complesso di nove fontane, simboli degli antichi rioni romani: oltre alla Fontana della Botte, vi sono la Fontana delle Anfore, la Fontana delle Arti, la Fontana dei Libri, la Fontana dei Monti, la Fontana delle Palle di Cannone, la Fontana della Pigna, la Fontana delle Tiare e la Fontana del Timone). La Fontana della Botte è situata all'interno di un arco di travertino, addossata ad una parete laterale, con al centro un barile, posto in verticale, anticamente utilizzato per il trasporto del vino dai Castelli romani alle trattorie e taverne del centro storico. In epoca antica il barile o la botte prende il nome di “Caratello“, una sorta di vaso di legno, a forma cilindrica, che per la sua resistenza agli urti (rispetto alle anfore di terracotta) veniva utilizzato per trasportare il vino sui carri. Dal foro del barile fuoriesce l'acqua che viene raccolta nel mezzo tino da mesto, collocato al basamento. Ai lati del barile centrale sono collocate due misure di vino, ciascuna di un litro, tipiche delle osterie romane, dalle quali zampilla l'acqua che viene raccolta in piccole conche poste alla base. Proprio il barile centrale e le due misure di vino laterali rimandano alle numerose osterie e trattorie dello storico quartiere romano di Trastevere, ancora oggi sopravvissute allo scorrere inesorabile del tempo.
