ll ponte del Diavolo è uno dei simboli di Cividale del Friuli. Arditamente sospeso sul Natisone ed avvolto nella leggenda. Le due sponde erano unite, almeno dal Duecento, da un passaggio in legno, sostituito dopo diversi tentativi inconcludenti dal manufatto in pietra progettato da lacopo Dugaro da Bissone, che ne iniziò la costruzione l'anno 1442. I lavori, lenti e contrastati da avversità di varia natura, proseguirono cinque anni dopo sotto la guida di Erardo (o Everardo) da Villaco, già collaboratore del Dugaro, che forse era morto di peste o, secondo altre versioni, si era defilato senza onorare interamente i suoi obblighi contrattuali.Deceduto il capomastro Erardo, era Bartolomeo delle Cisterne a ultimare l'agognato ponte, che in base ad un atto notarile sappiamo essere stato lastricato nel 1501 ed ancora nel 1558. Le sue estremità erano difese da torri, abbattute verso la seconda metà del secolo scorso. Lavori di restauro si sono succededuti nel tempo per mantenere in piena efficienza l'indispensabile passaggio, che doveva sopportare le piene impetuose del fiume.Nel 1843, durante i lavori di rinforzo del pilastro centrale, vennero rinvenuti due importanti cippi di epoca romana, ora in Museo.
