Interessante la mancanza di dibattito sull'attribuzione di quest'opera che sovrintendenze e accademici vogliono di Giacomo Pacchiarotti, pittore minore senese. Molto indizi di più recente scoperta lasciano infatti ipotizzare che la madonna possa essere del Pinturicchio e le figure sulla destra di Raffaello. Primo tra gli indizi, la somiglianza di S.Ippolito (quello più a destra) con vari autoritratti di Raffaello (usanza diffusa all'epoca). Il giallo si infittisce anche per fatto che il restauratore pontificio, negli anni '80, ha cancellato le iniziali 'RAPH.V' che foto antecedenti fanno intravedere nel colletto della figura. Strano che l'ipotesi di nuova attribuzione non venga contraddetta, ma semplicemente ignorata.
