La fortezza feudale di Varaždin, chiamata la Città Vecchia fin dall'antichità, è l'edificio storico più importante di Varaždin. Era il centro di una tenuta nobiliare, posseduta e legalmente separata dalla città reale e libera di Varaždin. La fortezza odierna fu costruita dal XIV al XIX secolo. La parte più antica è la torre centrale. Le panchine e le tettoie al piano terra sono gli esempi più belli di scultura gotica laica nel nord della Croazia. Durante le guerre con i turchi nel XVI secolo ricostruito nel Rinascimento Wasserburg, una fortezza - un castello circondato da alti terrapieni con bastioni, circondato da una doppia cintura d'acqua. La ricostruzione fu eseguita nella seconda metà del XVI secolo da costruttori italiani provenienti dalle vicinanze di Como, guidati dal principale costruttore di fortificazioni imperiali sul confine slavo, Domenico del Lallio. In passato fu di proprietà di molte importanti famiglie nobili, i Conti di Celje, Ivan Ungnad, Juraj Brandenburg e il croato Ban Tomo Erdödy e i suoi successori. Nel 1925 divenne proprietà della città di Varaždin.
