Mercoledì 7 Agosto. La giornata più brutta con continua pioggia e vento! E pensare che da molto tempo avevo ideato una bella giornata di trekking sul lago Ullswater con diversi km a piedi da percorrere per accedere alla cima di un monte con un bellissimo panorama sul lago. Il tragitto sul lago sarebbe stato realizzato con un battello che ci avrebbe portato ai piedi del monte. Inutile parlare di quello che doveva essere perché il battello non viaggiava per il forte vento e a piedi data la pioggia era impossibile pensare di andare; e cosi mesti e tristi siamo ritornati al cottage distante circa 30km. Il pomeriggio abbiamo provato a fare una passeggiata sul lago Derwenter ma anche li abbiamo dovuto desistere per i continui scrosci d'acqua. Solo in serata, preso dalla disperazione, ho preso la macchina ed in solitaria mi sono recato al Crummock Water di cui avevo letto cose affascinanti nel libro di Bryson. Sono passato da strade strettissime, per fortuna non passava nessuno dall'altra parte; ho dovuto aprire enormi cancelli e richiuderli per non fare fuggire le pecore dal loro pascolo ed alla fine sono arrivato in un luogo bellissimo dove non c'era anima viva. Sono stato li in solitaria per circa un ora a gustarmi questa affascinante e suggestiva atmosfera, regalandomi il momento più bello di tutta la vacanza. Vi faccio vedere questa mia foto ma non so se riuscirete a percepire le emozioni che ho provato…però leggetevi queste due righe scritte dal mio amico ideale Bryson: “ Ero diretto a Keswick quando mi imbattei in un cartello che puntava una strada laterale diretta al Loweswater. Pensavo di conoscere abbastanza bene il Lake District, e invece ecco un lago di cui, per quanto ricordassi non avevo mai sentito parlare; così feci una brusca sterzata e andai ad indagare. Il Lake district quando è bello, e di solito non si scende mai sotto quella soglia, è senza dubbio il posto più meraviglioso al mondo; e quello era l'angolo più piacevole in cui mi fosse capitato imbattermi. Ed era tutto per me. A parte un paio di fattorie, sembrava che non ci passasse nessuno da anni. La strada era così stretta che dovevo stare costantemente attento per evitare di strisciare contro i muri a secco, e quindi era un continuo accostare e scendere per vedere il panorama. A un certo punto abbandonai l'auto in una piazzola e camminai per circa ottocento metri tra la fine del Loweswater e un lago vicino il Crummock Water, attraverso una vallata stupenda, sotto colline imponenti, il tutto inondato dal sole. Non incontrai nessuno. Avrei potuto lasciare l'auto in mezzo alla strada.”…da Piccola grande Isola di Bill Bryson. È proprio quello che è successo a me quella sera!
