Mi raccontò un giorno Louì, seduti sulla panca davanti alla vecchia casa con gli occhi colmi della Gran Rossa, che una volta, quando era giovane e in inverno si spingeva con gli altri oltre il confine a barattare merce per racimolare un po' di danaro e sostenere l'economia famigliare, incontrava spessissimo le pernici bianche. Per lui erano sempre una piacevole compagnia; in mezzo all'ostilità delle terre alte rappresentavano uno dei pochi guizzi di vita capaci di scaldarti il cuore. Generalmente si involavano numerose dalla pista per trovarsi una costa meno trafficata dove grattare la neve e becchettare qualche raro filo d'erba, ma a volte invece capitava che pedinassero avanti ai montanari, come a volerli accompagnare sino al colle: “Avec ces leviers courts équipés de crampons disproportionnés, ils vous anticipaient de 10 à 15 mètres ; parfois ils vous attendaient et quand vous vous approchiez trop près, ils se remettaient à marcher, traçant la fine couche de neige de mille petites empreintes qui zigzaguaient entre elles et indiquaient la direction du col.
