Apatura ilia ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) - Famiglia Nymphalidae - Sottofamiglia Apaturinae - Apertura alare: Da 5 a 6,3 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente nelle regioni settentrionali e centrali fino al Lazio. - Habitat: Boschi chiari dalla pianura fino a 900 m. - Periodo di volo: Bivoltina da giugno ai primi di luglio e da agosto ai primi di settembre. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Salici e pioppi. - Dimorfismo sessuale: Femmina di dimensioni maggiori e non cangiante. - Variazioni: Questa specie produce anche individui scuri con banda bianca, sia maschili che femminili, molto rari nelle popolazioni della Pianura Padana, ma con una percentuale che può superare il 50% nel Lazio. La forma scura è quella tipica della specie e prevalente a nord delle Alpi. La forma fulva, presente in Pianura Padana prende il nome di forma clytie. - Specie simili: Apatura iris da cui si distingue facilmente negli esemplari fulvi, ma si può confondere con quelli scuri. In questi casi occorre osservare in Apatura ilia la presenza sul diritto dell'ala anteriore di un ocello che, anche quando è piccolo, è ben visibile in quanto contornato di fulvo. Inoltre, la banda bianca delle ali posteriori ha una punta verso l'esterno davanti alla terza nervatura mediana.
