Oggi facciamo una breve gita virtuale dalle parti della Torre di Palidoro, un luogo ricordato anche per il martirio di Salvo D'Acquisto. Essa presenta tre caratteristiche che ritroviamo anche in altre torri di Fiumicino. Innanzitutto, è stata costruita sulle basi di una struttura precedente (come, probabilmente, la Torre di Pio V o la Torre di Maccarese, per citare alcuni esempi). Fa parte di un insieme di torri costiere volute dallo Stato Pontificio per difendere il litorale romano dai nemici che giungevano via mare (anche qui, citiamo la Torre di Maccarese). Infine, si trova oggi in una posizione molto diversa da quella originaria: a circa 100 metri dal mare. Come altre torri del nostro paese, ha subito gli effetti dell'avanzamento della costa. Chiamata anche Torre Perla, si trova nella località di Palidoro, a nord di Passoscuro. È stata costruita in epoca medioevale per fronteggiare l'attacco delle truppe saracene e si inserisce nell'insieme di torri costiere edificate tra l'VIII e il IX secolo. Costruita sulla base di ruderi romani, ha una pianta quadrata ed è alta venti metri. Dopo essere passata (insieme al borgo di Palidoro) nelle mani della famiglia Muti e poi Peretti, tra il 1562 e il 1563 fu restaurata per volere dell'arcispedale Santo Spirito in Sassia, e da allora ha l'aspetto odierno. Insieme alle dune di Palidoro e alla Torre Primavera di Maccarese, fa parte delle numerose aree naturali e di interesse storico-archeologico della Riserva Naturale Statale del litorale romano. Assolutamente suggestivo anche il vicino borgo medievale di Palidoro, immerso nella campagna dell'Agro Romano. Accanto alla torre, è stata eretta nel 1960 una stele in marmo in onore del vicebrigadiere dei Carabinieri Salvo D'Acquisto, morto a soli 23 anni nelle vicinanze, per mano dei tedeschi. A Salvo d'Acquisto è stata anche conferita una medaglia d'Oro al Valor Militare, per il suo incredibile gesto di coraggio e altruismo.
