Il profilo del Sass de Stria e la sua croce di vetta alle ultime luci. Una cima "modesta" (rispetto alle circostanti) - il cui nome in ladino significa il sasso della strega (per via di un'antica leggenda) - che si trova però a dominare il Passo Valparola e quello di Falzarego, che mettono in comunicazione l'Agordino, Cortina e l'Alta Badia. Proprio per la sua posizione era ritenuto d'importanza strategica durante il primo conflitto mondiale, al punto che divenne uno dei capisaldi della difesa austriaca nel settore, dopo l'abbandono dell'ormai obsoleto Forte Tre Sassi. La cima è stata pesantemente fortificata, con una fitta rete di trincee e gallerie (tra cui la galleria Goiginger, che correva lungo il suo fianco settentrionale e permetteva di raggiungere la posizione avanzata, controllando al contempo la strada tra i due passi). Proprio per via della sua rilevanza strategica fu oggetto di un ardito attacco italiano, il 15 ottobre 1915, che risultò vano, con le morti del giovanissimo sottotenente Mario Fusetti (che guidava l'attacco) e dei sui commilitoni che avevano raggiunto la cima dopo averne scalato le irte pareti.
