Le imbarcazioni costituiscono l'elemento indispensabile per la pesca del tonno; il loro colore nero, dovuto alla pece, oltre a rispondere alla funzione pratica del calafataggio, fa loro assumere un aspetto simile a quello dei tonni, quasi a caratterizzare una continuità nell'ambito della loro funzione. Ogni barca ha una forma e funzione ben precisa a seconda del suo utilizzo durante la mattanza. Il termine Tonnara si riferisce al complesso sistema di reti a camere successive che si estendeva per 5 km di lunghezza per 50 metri di larghezza detto Isola. I tonni venivano convogliati in questa sequenza di camere fino a raggiungere l'ultima (detta camera della morte) in cui avveniva la vera mattanza. Il termine Tonnara si è poi esteso <nche alle struttura adibite a magazzini delle barche, delle reti, all'alloggio dei tonnaroti e alla prima lavorazione del tonno. L'ambiente all'interno dello stabilimento dove vengono conservate e sistemate le imbarcazioni si chiama “mafaraggio” o "marifaràtico": è il luogo in cui oltre alle imbarcazioni sono conservate anche le reti, gli ormeggi e tutto ciò che forma la dote della tonnara.
