In una calda sera d'estate, nel lontano 1792, il signor William Herschel ha puntato il suo telescopio nella costellazione principe del cielo estivo, quella del Cigno, più precisamente vicino alla stella Sadr. Non avrebbe mai immaginato quello che avrebbe visto. Un'onda d'urto provocata dall'esplosione di una gigante rossa circa 250'000 anni fa. Questa gigante rossa, ormai prossima alla sua morte, iniziò ad ingrandirsi sempre di più fino ad esplodere attraverso una reazione termo nucleare di fusione del suo nucleo. L'istante dopo la sua esplosione, il caos cosmico. Le onde d'urto provocate dell'esplosione collidono tra di loro, i gas incandescenti ed i venti cosmici si intersecano, dando origine ad una splendida nebulosa. Questa nebulosa, chiamata "Crescent" o NGC 6888 è una "bolla" di vento stellare generata dall'esplosione della stella HD 192163 che si trova al suo interno (la stella centrale nella foto). Questa stella ha ancora una luminosità 500'000 volte superiore al sole ed è giovanissima, ha soli 4,5 milioni di anni (quasi un millesimo dell'età del nostro Sole), è però già in una fase avanzatissima della sua evoluzione, in quanto, dopo la sua esplosione, sta perdendo massa molto rapidamente. Si calcola che fra 100'000 anni esploderà di nuovo sparendo dal firmamento formando una brillante supernova. Questa nebulosa si trova a 4'700 anni luce da noi ed ha una dimensione, lungo il lato più lungo, di circa 16 anni luce. La foto è una somma di 124 ore di pose ed è frutto della collaborazione tra Pineta1984 e Luca Barcaro (Astrodivers).
