Il Mercado de La Ribera, la più grande dispensa di Bilbao, entrato nel Guinness dei Primati nel 1990 come il Mercato Generale Municipale più completo del mondo, si trova nel luogo dell'oramai scomparsa Plaza Vieja di Bilbao. Situato sulla sponda destra del Nervión (come si vede nell'immagine di copertina) la sua posizione centrale gli permette di essere il testimone di secoli di storia. Le sette vie del Casco Viejo, contigue al mercato, conservano il brioso spirito medievale; mentre la vicina stazione di Achuri o i palazzi borghesi sulla sponda opposta dai colori vivaci rappresentano la testimonianza della crescita industriale vissuta dalla città nel XIX secolo.
