L'eruzione dell'Etna nel 2002 iniziata la notte tra il 26 e il 27 ottobre del 2002 per la stazione turistica di Piano Provenzana ha segnato un momento storico della sua esistenza. Una forte e continua attività sismica iniziata intorno le 22.00 del 26 ottobre segna l'inizio della grande eruzione di Etna nord. A seguire, dopo le forti scosse, notiamo una forte esplosione del cratere di Nord est subito bloccata dopo una breve attività di sfogo. Dopo questo stop improvviso, il vulcano riprende fiato e ripartono nuovamente le continue scosse sismiche fino a formare una lunga serie di bocche laterali e lineari chiamate “bottoniera” che interessarono il rift di nord est. Fratture che rapidamente una dopo l'altra iniziano a fare sbuffi di lava e forte emissione di cenere.
