La Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme si trova a Roma, nel rione Esquilino, e fa parte del percorso di visita delle Sette Chiese che i pellegrini anticamente visitavano a piedi. All'epoca dell'imperatore Augusto la zona ove si trova la Basilica era periferica e a carattere residenziale; fu scelta dagli imperatori Severi, nel III sec. d.C. per costruire la residenza imperiale che comprendeva un palazzo, il Circo Variano e l'Anfiteatro Castrense, poi incluso nelle Mura Aureliane costruite tra il 271 e il 275 d.C. Per volontà dell'imperatore Costantino il palazzo venne ristrutturato e gli fu attribuito il nome di “Sessorium”; nel 324, quando Costantino trasferì la capitale dell'impero a Costantinopoli, la residenza restò proprietà di sua madre Elena e subì molte modifiche fra cui la più importante fu la trasformazione di una parte del complesso residenziale in una cappella atta a contenere le reliquie della Croce, rinvenute dalla sovrana sul Monte Calvario. L'aspetto attuale risale al Settecento ed è opera degli architetti Pietro Passalacqua e Domenico Gregorini, incaricati da papa Benedetto XIV, cardinale titolare di Santa Croce.
