Pitigliano è un comune della provincia di Grosseto, situato a circa 80 km a sud-est del capoluogo. Il territorio comunale si estende su una superficie di 102,89 km² e conta 3.902 abitanti, con una densità di 39 abitanti per km². Il caratteristico centro storico è noto come la piccola Gerusalemme, per la storica presenza di una comunità ebraica, da sempre ben integrata nel contesto sociale che qui aveva la propria sinagoga. Pitigliano è un caratteristico borgo della Maremma grossetana, unico nel suo genere per la particolarità di essere costruito interamente su di un masso tufaceo, ciò lo rende uno dei luoghi più interessanti dell'area del tufo. Fondato dai Romani nei pressi di vicine necropoli e insediamenti etrusche delimitati da mura, divenne nel Medioevo possesso della famiglia Aldobrandeschi; alla fine del Duecento il centro venne ereditato dagli Orsini e diventò la capitale dell'omonima contea sotto la quale rimase fino agli inizi del Seicento, quando nel 1608 venne acquistato dai Medici, che lo inglobarono nel Granducato di Toscana.
