Lauterbrunnen è un comune svizzero che conta circa 2.360 abitanti e si trova nel Canton Berna nella regione dell'Oberland. La località è situata in una delle valli alpine più suggestive racchiuse tra enormi pareti di roccia con cime elevate, nota per le sue 72 cascate che cadono in modo fragoroso e gli alpeggi ricoperti di fiori dai mille colori. La Valle di Lauterbrunnen è inoltre una riserva naturale di notevole importanza tra quelle presenti in Svizzera. Il nome del borgo Lauter-Brunnen significa letteralmente forte fontana ed è evocativo della caratteristica che più si riconosce nel paesaggio: le fragorose cascate.
