Se gli ingegneri non avessero pensato ed adottato la soluzione dei contrafforti e degli archi rampanti , che oltre a essere esteticamente gradevoli risolvono brillantemente i problemi strutturali dovuti allo spanciamento dei muri a causa delle spinte laterali, molto probabilmente la maggioranza delle splendide cattedrali che si possono ammirare in parecchie regioni europee al giorno d'oggi non sarebbero altro che un cumulo di macerie .
