Gyumri è una città con una lunga storia, ma divenne importante come avamposto dell'impero russo all'inizio del XIX secolo con il nome di Alexandropol. Passeggiando per la città, infatti, si possono vedere numerosi edifici in stile zarista, chiese ortodosse e lunghi viali eleganti. Essendo la seconda città della repubblica armena, anche durante il periodo sovietico mantenne la sua importanza. Venne costruita una grande stazione ferroviaria e una prestigiosa università. Tutto questo ebbe termine il 7 dicembre del 1988, quando un violento terremoto di magnitudo pari a 6.8 colpì la regione. La città venne quasi completamente distrutta, ci furono migliaia di morti e di sfollati. Quando il tassista ci porta in quel luogo, sembra dubbioso di lasciarci lì. Il Politecnico non c'è più, solo macerie e la fontana, spenta, come lo scheletro di un animale morto molti anni fa. Tutto intorno edifici residenziali fatiscenti e immondizia, gli unici abitanti sembrano i cani randagi che abbaiano a chiunque si avvicini. La fontana sembra porto franco, ma sento una vaga inquietudine addosso, il sole sta cominciando a calare e dopo un quarto d'ora chiamiamo un taxi.
