Poco prima dell'alba, assieme a Josè, ci siamo incamminati diretti alla malga “Shaplet” per verificare la situazione “post invernale” della struttura. Oltre alla solita attrezzatura, abbiamo pensato bene di portare con noi una motosega certi che percorrendo la mulattiera che attraversa la conca della “Mai”, nascosta da una fitta pineta particolarmente ferita dagli ultimi carichi nevosi, ne avremmo avuto certamente bisogno. Lentamente, un po' per il carico e un po' per i numerosi tagli necessari a liberare il percorso dalle piante e dai rami schiantati, senza forzare, tra chiacchiere spensierate e profumo di miscela, nel giro di un'oretta e mezza ci siamo ritrovati a percorrere l'ultima ripida e pietrosa parte della via che da accesso ai pascoli e alla malga. Stavamo discutendo dei palchi di cervo rinvenuti nella zona e delle coturnici che ci aspettavamo di vedere frullare da un momento all'altro quando, proprio prima di affacciarci sui pascoli, siamo stati colti da un inimitabile “rugolìo” seguito da alcuni violenti “soffi” emessi da un inatteso gallo forcello. “Un forcello! Si direbbe a valle della malga… Ma, le arene non si dovrebbero trovare più a monte?” Il fare sospettoso e il basso tono di voce con cui Josè mi descriveva la situazione mi strapparono dai futili pensieri della mattinata scaraventandomi nella appassionante realtà celata in quell'angolo di montagna. Entusiasmato dall'inaspettata situazione ho meccanicamente gettato gli attrezzi a terra e spronato Josè a togliersi la giacca. Strisciammo, con le giacche sulla testa nell'avventato tentativo di rendere irriconoscibili le nostre sagome allampanate, per affacciarci silenziosi sulla leggera depressione che delimita i confini inferiori del pascolo. …Nei nostri occhi increduli si specchiavano la malga cinta da due spesse e immacolate braccia nevose e lì, a pochi metri, un bel gallo, nero e impettito, fieramente deciso a difendere i confini del suo territorio.
