L'attuale complesso, costituito da chiesa, campanile e casa eremitale, fu edificato nella prima metà del XVIII sec. su uno sperone roccioso, punto panoramico d'eccezione per abbracciare, con un solo sguardo, tutto il Cusio e i monti della riviera orientale. Per secoli la bianca roccia granitica su cui sorge il santuario venne utilizzata come pietra da taglio. In origine in questo luogo, alle falde del monte Avigno, esisteva una cappelletta, dedicata all'Addolorata, nel 1590 è già citata una chiesa, volta a oriente, ma certo più antica, poiché era presente la tavola della Deposizione, dipinta da Fermo Stella da Caravaggio datata 1541. La fama dei miracoli ottenuti in questo luogo sacro aveva favorito l'edificazione di questa prima chiesa, che divenne un Santuario frequentato anche dalla Valsesia. Oltre al pregevole dipinto, nell' edificio era conservata una statuetta della Madonna del Rosario ritenuta miracolosa. Il piazzale affacciato a lago era detto “prato della tela”, perché nelle giornate calde e soleggiate, le donne usavano stendervi la tela fatta in casa per candeggiarla. Oggi L'attuale complesso fu voluto nel 1706 dal boletese Pietro Paolo Minola, ricco commerciante emigrato a Milano che, come ex voto per una grazia ricevuta dalla Madonna, finanziò l'edificazione del nuovo santuario, volto a occidente. I lavori iniziarono verso il 1725, anche col contributo degli abitanti di Boleto. Nel 1748 fu completa la chiesa, il campanile e la casa furono terminati nel 1760. Il santuario fu consacrato nel 1771 dal Vescovo di Novara. La chiesa, in stile tardo barocco, è a croce greca, con due altari laterali; le architetture e gli affreschi sono opera del pittore-architetto valsesiano Lorenzo Peracino. Sull'altare fu posta la Deposizione di Fermo Stella da Caravaggio. Nel 1998, in occasione dei 250 anni dalla costruzione, l'intero complesso è stato completamente restaurato. Nel 2021, si è proceduto ad un adeguamento liturgico e tecnologico degli spazi.
