La location è strepitosa: la chiesa di San Pietro si affaccia su uno spiazzo erboso tra il Palazzo dei Canonici e le possenti torri di difesa sopra l'antica acropoli: un colpo d'occhio che difficilmente si dimentica. Se l'edificio, come si pensa, venne costruito nell'VIII secolo, saremmo di fronte a un caposaldo della storia dell'architettura italiana, in quanto segnerebbe il punto di passaggio artistico dalle forme paleocristiane a quelle romaniche; ma a tal proposito gli studiosi non sono del tutto concordi. Quel che è certo è che la sublime facciata di San Pietro fu costruita verso la fine dell'anno 1000

La facciata, avanzata nel corpo centrale, presenta quali elementi principali il portale maggiore, il rosone circondato da una moltitudine di elementi decorativi e gli ingressi laterali. Il portale maggiore, incassato nel muro a conci di nenfro, è opera di un marmoraro romano di scuola cosmatesca.



L'interno è altrettanto sorprendente e ricco di opere d'arte. Da ammirare il pavimento cosmatesco a decorazioni geometriche, la foresta di colonne della cripta, un ciborio, ossia un tabernacolo, risalente all'XI secolo su cui è incisa la misteriosa data 1093.



Ebbene ci siano sarcofagi etruschi esposti nella navata sinistra, siamo all'interno di un luogo di culto consacrato e decorato con reperti etruschi.

Assieme all'altra immagine un classico scattata dall'arco antistante al prato della Basilica.
