Ordine: Pelecaniformes Famiglia: Phalacrocoracidae Il Cormorano presenta un corpo lungo e affusolato di colore nero. Il suo robusto becco ha una caratteristica forma a uncino; grazie a un lungo ed elastico collo a forma di “S” riesce a nutrirsi di pesci, fagocitandoli direttamente nell'esofago. Questa specie spesso raggiunge grandi dimensioni: la lunghezza può variare da 79 a 102 cm e l'apertura alare da 121 a 160 cm. Il peso va da 1,5 finanche a 5,3 kg. Per distinguere i più giovani della specie, basta osservare il colore del piumaggio che, prima del raggiungimento dell'età adulta, ha una tonalità marroncina. Specie “cosmopolita”, abita praticamente tutti i continenti. La sottospecie nominale (Phalacrocorax carbo carbo ) abita le coste atlantiche settentrionali; la sottospecie Phalacrocorax carbo sintesis si trova in Europa centrale e meridionale e in Asia. Altre sottospecie abitano Africa e Oceania. In Italia, il Cormorano è svernante regolare, migratore, localmente estivante e nidificante stazionario. Nel nostro Paese la specie nidifica sempre in vicinanza dell'acqua: il sito di presenza più vasto è quello di Valle Santa (Parco regionale del Delta del Po). Il Cormorano si sposta solitamente in stormi di poche unità fino a centinaia di individui. È una specie gregaria e nidifica a partire dal terzo-quinto anno di vita in colonie. I dormitori e i posatoi diurni si trovano presso zone umide scarsamente frequentate dall'uomo.
