Posta alle estreme propaggini del Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, è Scapoli, piccolo Borgo di mezza montagna. Occupa l'ultimo lembo di terra della provincia d'Isernia, appena prima che i venti inizino a diffondere nell'aria l'odore del Mar Tirreno. Salgo la Valle del Volturno per raggiungerla, fino a che mi si para innanzi come un'Albanella Minore sulla punta d'uno sperone di roccia appenninica. Un vento caldo di luglio soffia tra vicoli d'una spoglia bellezza. Qualche anziano uccide il tempo tra giochi di carte e un minuscolo Ufficio Postale trasmette una certa aria di frontiera. Tra i pochi volti che incontro, emigrati che fanno ritorno per l'estate dalle lontane Americhe, ove il desiderio d'una qualche possibilità li condusse negli anni 60. Qualche parola in Molisano resta aggrappata all'ormai più familiare slang d'oltreoceano. Parliamo un attimo di quanto sia bella Boston, " che in fondo sembra d'essere in Europa, peccato che piova sempre ". Queste terre magnifiche e orgogliose, si portano appresso un fondo di mestizia che ha a che fare con decenni di dimenticanza. Sulla cima, il Palazzo del Battiloro affonda le sue mura a strapiombo nella valle, mentre, tutt'intorno, le vette puntute delle Mainarde si protendono oltre i 2000 metri. Qui s'annida la storia della Zampogna, strumento antichissimo e divenuto, nei secoli, espressione d'una cultura prevalentemente agropastorale, semplice e popolare. La sua traccia serpeggia ovunque nell'abitato. Le Botteghe dei Grandi Maestri sono ormai per lo più vuote. Il trascorrere del tempo ha presentato anche ad essi l'inevitabile conto. A resistere tenacemente, però, è la figura di un uomo apparentemente introverso, come certi caratteri di montagna, di cui mi parlano in paese. La sua "tana" è nel cuore d'un magnifico Palazzo storico che mi appare anch'esso d'una struggente decadenza. Si chiama Franco, ed imparerò presto, tra le ombre che si allungano dal profondo delle ampie stanze, la passione che nutre per lo strumento e con quanta dignità si impegni nel difendere la cultura dei suoi luoghi e delle tradizioni che ne custodiscono l'anima autentica, assediata da un tempo che sembra voler imporre a tutti il medesimo spartito. ____________________________________________________
