L'upupa comune o upupa eurasiatica o plumbus (Upupa epops Linnaeus, 1758) è un uccello bucerotiforme della famiglia degli Upupidi. Il nome di questo uccello deriva dall'onomatopea latina del verso che soprattutto i maschi sono soliti emettere durante il periodo riproduttivo, e che suona come un cupo hup-hup-hup trisillabico. L'upupa è sicuramente uno degli uccelli più appariscenti diffusi nell'area euro-mediterranea: la colorazione molto accesa, rosso-arancio con ali e coda a bande bianche e nere, il lungo becco leggermente ricurvo e la cresta erettile sulla testa risultano inconfondibili fra gli altri uccelli che abitano questa latitudine, sebbene risulti abbastanza difficile avvistare un'upupa in virtù delle sue abitudini schive e della sua predilezione per le aree rurali e scarsamente antropizzate. L'upupa è un uccello amante degli spazi aperti e dei climi miti: pur occupando un areale estremamente vasto (che comprende gran parte di Europa, Asia ed Africa), essa tende a migrare verso siti più caldi solo nelle aree temperate, mentre in quelle tropicali e subtropicali risulta stanziale.
