Il più vasto tra i Sistemi Dolomiti UNESCO si estende per 53.586 ettari nelle province di Belluno e Bolzano. Le Dolomiti 250 milioni di anni fa erano un insieme di conchiglie, coralli e alghe immerse in un mare tropicale. Emerse 70 milioni di anni fa, lavorate dal tempo e dagli agenti atmosferici, rappresentano oggi un magnifico tesoro geologico e donano al paesaggio una bellezza incomparabile. Queste montagne prendono il nome dal naturalista francese Déodat de Dolomieu, che nella seconda metà del 18°secolo, per primo, studiò il particolare tipo di roccia predominante in questa regione battezzandola “dolomia”.
