Godafoss è conosciuta da tutti gli islandesi come la "Cascata degli Dei". L'origine di questo curioso e mistico soprannome è legato ad uno dei fatti più rilevanti della storia islandese: la sua cristianizzazione, avvenuta nell'anno 1000 d.C. Stando alla leggenda, dopo aver bandito il paganesimo nell'Althing di Thingvellir, Porgeir Ljósvetningagodi (uno dei principali governatori dell'isola di allora) lanciò nelle acque di Godafoss tutti i suoi idoli pagani, sostituendo così gli dei vichinghi con il dio cristiano.
