Forma caratteristica tipica delle jacane, comprese le dita estremamente lunghe e sottili, estese da lunghe unghie simili a stecche, che consentono loro di camminare sulla vegetazione galleggiante delle aree paludose. Simile per dimensioni e morfologia alla jacana africana, dalla quale differisce per il colore del vertice e del collo. Non comune, vive nelle zone umide con fitta vegetazione delle pianure del Madagascar occidentale e settentrionale, soprattutto quelle con ninfee. Il sistema di accoppiamento poliandrico di questa specie lascia ai maschi tutte le cure parentali. Attualmente considerata a rischio (EN) per il degrado e la distruzione del suo habitat e perché cacciata. Lac Ravelobe, Parco nazionale di Ankarafantsika, Novembre 2023.
