Consonno la citta dei balocchi. Costruita dall'industriale Mario Bagno comprendeva una galleria commerciale arabeggiante con minareto, che nell'ultimo piano ospitava dei piccoli appartamenti per le vacanze, una pagoda cinese, un castello medievale come porta di ingresso, oltre a un albergo di lusso (l'"Hotel Plaza"). Venne anche spianata la collina di fronte al paese per migliorare la vista panoramica verso il Resegone. Dopo l'attenzione iniziale, dettata soprattutto dalla novità del posto, la Consonno "città dei balocchi", principalmente a causa di una serie di frane che spazzò via la nuova strada che la collegava con il centro di Olginate, cadde nell'oblio e nell'abbandono ancor prima di essere completata. Negli anni ottanta Mario Bagno tenterà un rilancio di Consonno, il primo tassello del quale avrebbe dovuto essere la casa di riposo per anziani aperta da frate Alberto Bosisio riconvertendo l'"Hotel Plaza", ma la cosa non riuscì mai a decollare. Tale struttura ricettiva è stata chiusa nel giugno 2007 ed è stata poco dopo praticamente distrutta nel corso del rave party "Summer Alliance", svoltosi dal 29 giugno al 1? luglio 2007 e al quale hanno partecipato alcune centinaia di persone.
