“Sa Carrela 'e nanti”, il tradizionale carnevale equestre di Santu Lussurgiu - Sa Carrela 'e nanti rappresenta un momento unico di riconoscimento della comunità locale. Da secoli, in concomitanza con le manifestazioni del carnevale, si svolge nel centro storico di Santu Lussurgiu, la corsa di cavalli a pariglie, chiamata “Sa Carrela 'e nanti”. L'attenzione e la passione per l'allevamento e la cura dei cavalli riveste, nel Montiferru e nella storia lussurgese in particolare, un ruolo primario e la manifestazione Sa Carrela 'e nanti, che deriva il suo nome dal quello antico della via che la ospita, costituisce un unicum in Sardegna. La corsa dei cavalli è la sintesi del carnevale di Santu Lussurgiu per il quale si raccoglie l'intera comunità: lo spettacolo è costituito dal cavaliere, i cavalli e il pubblico. Anche la folla, infatti, è parte integrante dell'evento creando un particolare effetto: la folta massa si apre un attimo prima dell'arrivo dei cavalli in corsa per richiudersi subito dopo il loro passaggio. Sa carrela 'e nanti è una strada sterrata lunga circa 350 metri, caratterizzata da ripide discese e salite, da curve e strettoie che si snodano lungo le viuzze del centro storico del paese. I cavalieri, rigorosamente lussurgesi, devono indossare, secondo la tradizione, una maschera o avere il volto dipinto. Sa mascherada, l'abbigliamento del cavaliere, è ricco di colori e fantasia. Può ricordare i costumi spagnoli, le casacche dei fantini oppure richiamare l'antico costume del paese, capotinu 'e fresi, giubbotto d'orbace (il tessuto di lana grezza, tipico della Sardegna, utilizzato per confezionare costumi regionali o cappotti, mantelli, coperte), oppure cossu 'e pedde 'e itellu (il corsetto di pelle) e la berretta longa, oppure ancora rappresentare altri personaggi più attuali. La manifestazione si svolge in tre giornate. La domenica di carnevale, i cavalieri si presentano a s'iscappadorzu, il punto in cui ha inizio la corsa e a gruppi di due si lanciano in questa ardita corsa. La corsa più comune è la pareza (a coppie), i cavalieri partono, corrono e arrivano insieme, con il braccio di uno sul braccio dell'altro volendo simboleggiare l'unità, la concordia, l'amicizia e la solidarietà. Il lunedì, chiamato “Su Lunisi de sa Pudda” (il lunedì della gallina), il cavaliere lanciato al galoppo deve buttare a terra con un bastone, chiamato “Su fuste 'e ortzastru”, un fantoccio che ha le sembianze di una gallina. Il martedì termina lo spettacolo con la premiazione dei cavalieri che hanno buttato giù più galline, delle tre migliori pariglie e di tutti gli altri partecipanti. Un riferimento certo della manifestazione di Santu Lussurgiu si rinviene nel dizionario del Casalis che cita “Sa Carrela 'e nanti” a partire dal 1840. Oggi come allora, nelle corse a pariglia che attualmente si svolgono per il carnevale a Santu Lussurgiu, i cavalieri devono essere dei veri acrobati così come impongono le regole di questo genere di manifestazione che ha origini nelle esercitazioni e nelle tradizioni delle cavallerie leggere.
