I fetonti sono eleganti uccelli marini tropicali, con lunghe penne caudali centrali della coda che conferiscono una grazia che pochi uccelli possono eguagliare. I fetonti sono veri pelagici e trascorrono la maggior parte del loro tempo vagando per gli oceani alla ricerca di pesci volanti e calamari che catturano immergendosi. Il fetonte codarossa è la più rara delle tre specie di fetonti esistenti. Nidifica solo su isole oceaniche remote e isolate, spesso in luoghi inaccessibili e si disperde ampiamente nell'Oceano Pacifico centrale e meridionale e nell'Oceano Indiano meridionale.
