IL Faro di Capo d'Anzio - Dove oggi è visibile il Faro di Anzio fu eretta nel Medioevo dalla famiglia Frangipane una torre costiera di segnalazione e avvistamento delle incursioni dei pirati saraceni. L'edificio col tempo andò in rovina e fu ricostruito nel 1645 ma sopravvisse solo fino al 1813 quando venne distrutto dai bombardamenti delle navi inglesi che, impegnate contro Napoleone in tutto il Mediterraneo, attaccarono la guarnigione francese presente ad Anzio. Cinquant'anni dopo, nel 1866, il papa Pio IX realizzò sul medesimo luogo il faro come lo vediamo oggi: una torre di 21 metri sullo stesso costone tufaceo che ospita anche i resti degli antichi edifici romani (la Villa Imperiale e le strutture di supporto al Porto antico, le cosiddette Grotte di Nerone). La lanterna si trova quindi a ben 37 metri sul livello del mare riuscendo così a mandare il suo fascio luminoso della potenza di 1000 watt fino a 22 miglia nautiche di distanza (circa 40 km !).
