Nella popolazione di lupo appenninico sono presenti alcuni lupi neri ed è una situazione abbastanza atipica a differenza di quanto avviene in alcune popolazioni del nord America (anche se probabilmente in Italia i lupi neri sono sottostimati). Identificare con certezza se ibrido o meno è impossibile, salvo test genetici e ad oggi l'ipotesi più probabile è quella che attribuisce ai lupi neri fenomeni di ibridazione ma possono esserci motivi legati ad un discorso di selezione naturale (i lupi neri sembrano favoriti) o ad una mutazione di una popolazione.
E' importante sottolineare che alcuni lupi neri sono di fatto lupi al 100% in quanto non presentano contaminazioni con il cane domestico e quindi per forza un lupo nero è un lupo ibrido (a monte potrebbero esserci contaminazioni ma se parliamo di tante generazioni precedenti si perde sempre più il grado di ibridazione)
Bisogna analizzare caso per caso e soprattutto con analisi genetiche...senza di queste è impossibile stabilirne la purezza.
