Non troppo lontano dal centro di Firenze, c'è un posto incredibile che devi visitare (per la visita gli orari invernali sono dalle 09,00-14,00). È Villa Demidoff a Pratolino, un'elegante dimora medicea con un bellissimo giardino che nasconde una maestosa statua cinquecentesca: è il Colosso dell'Appennino, l'incredibile scultura realizzata negli anni ottanta del Cinquecento dallo scultore fiammingo Jean de Boulogne, detto Gianbologna, con l'intento di rappresentare gli Appennini, è alta 14 metri e poggia su una grotta, le sue acque vengono raccolte nel sottostante laghetto dove nel periodo di primavera estate fiorisce il fior di loto.

Nella seconda metà del Cinquecento Francesco I de' Medici affidò a Bernardo Buontalenti il progetto per la costruzione di una villa, poi distrutta, ed oggi conosciuta come Villa Demidoff a Pratolino

Questo incredibile Colosso, metà uomo e metà montagna, fu eretto a guardia di un laghetto come simbolo delle aspre montagne dell'Appennino italiano.

All'esterno la statua è ornata di spugne e creazioni calcaree con il compito di versare l'acqua nel laghetto sottostante.

Si narra che, visto il risultato ottenuto con il Colosso dell'Appennino, fu coniata la celebre frase che recita: “Giambologna fece l'Appennino ma si pentì d'averlo fatto a Pratolino.” Questo non perché Pratolino non si meritasse tale magnificenza ma semplicemente perché se si fosse trovata su una “piazza principale” di una città importante sarebbe oggi una delle attrazioni più note al mondo.
