La scena era tenerissima. Quattro cuccioli di ghepardo, di tre o quattro settimane, con ancora la loro pelliccetta grigiastra sul dorso e sul collo, erano in mezzo all'erba in una vasta area scoperta, estremamente vulnerabili ad attacchi di iene o altri predatori. La mamma li aveva lasciati per andare a caccia e loro se ne stavano lì, uno addosso all'altro a proteggersi, emettendo ogni tanto un debole verso, a metà tra il cinguettio di un uccello e il miagolio di un gatto, e guardando nella direzione in cui era scomparsa. Non potevano vederla, era troppo lontana. Era a oltre 300 metri di distanza e, dopo aver catturato un impala, lo stava trascinando sotto un albero. Ma potevano finalmente sentirla e, al suo richiamo, si sono lanciati di corsa, uno dietro l'altro, per raggiungerla.
