Other Pink Thunderstorms sent on December 29, 2023 (0:08) by Claudio Ricci. 13 comments, 433 views. [retina]

1/500 f/4.9, ISO 50, hand held. Santa Severa, Italy.

Spectacular scenery with crazy clouds!
Well done Claudio ;-)

Thank you! Yes, an imposing wall of cumulonimbus clouds that regenerated continuously, lasted for hours, someone down there even reported over 50 mm of rain, and, in Priverno, I saw photos of hail as big as golf pellets. By dusk they typically turned bright pink (I didn't have to do much in post-production), and, just as typically, they quickly disappeared within the next hour. In mid-March, a rarity, it wasn't even such a hot day (they are thunderstorms with a strong thermal component, usually formed when in the plains it begins to get at least 22-25 degrees in the afternoon). There was probably also cold air at high altitude.

They look like impassable snow-capped mountains illuminated by the sun.
A powerful effect of the weather.
Nice this shot to show it.
Greetings, Alessandro

Thank you very much to everyone, they seemed much farther away, but the telephoto has the classic distance-crushing effect and looks like a solid wall that one could reach in 10 minutes by car (there was at least a third of the region to cross instead...).

The image is well balanced both in composition and in particularities and colors. The caption you wrote is interesting, unfortunately due to the anomalous encounter between hot and cold air masses these bad hailstorms happen. In my area this year there was a thunderstorm and hailstorm in November, never seen in my life such a weather situation. Well done to you, bye.

Thank you very much. The macroscopic climatic anomaly, in the sense of excess temperature, has also produced thunderstorms at times of the year, depending on the area, when they were unthinkable until a few years ago. It's not the first time in March, but it's rare. In November in the North it is rare except I think in Liguria and very few other corners.
