In Giappone esiste una cosa ben definita che si chiama “morte per troppo lavoro” (karoshi), che rientra ufficialmente nelle statistiche delle cause di morte. Esistono degli studi al riguardo che ne esaminano le ragioni, che possono dipendere da troppe ore di lavoro, troppo pochi riposi settimanali, troppi straordinari anche a casa, oppure eccessive pressioni sul luogo di lavoro, tutti elementi che possono portare a gravi disturbi tra i quali anche attacchi di cuore. E' un problema cronico, noto fin dagli anni 80, che non si è mai riusciti a risolvere, sostanzialmente perché non vengono imposte significative sanzioni alle aziende che fanno lavorare troppo i loro dipendenti, oppure perché non vengono applicati dei tetti massimi alle ore straordinarie. Le uniche iniziative prese in maniera velleitaria da singole aziende sono l'introduzione dell'usanza di chiudere prima gli uffici in certi giorni (i cosiddetti “go home early days”), oppure lo spegnimento delle luci alle 22.
