Questi animali sono detti Cervi killer (o Cervi assassini), perchè durante le lotte ingaggiate con i consimili per il possesso dell'harem, possono infliggere con le aste prive di ramificazioni, ferite letali ai loro rivali. Il temine sardo deriva da "sula", la "lesina", cioè lo strumento utilizzato per forare e cucire anche le pelli più robuste.
