Il Fanello (Carduelis cannabina, Linnaeus 1758) è un uccello della famiglia dei Fringillidae, apprezzato per il canto.I colori vanno dal bruno del dorso al rosso vivo di fronte e petto (solo i maschi e non in cattività), dal grigio del disegno facciale al bianco della banda alare, oltre le remiganti nere. Normalmente raggiunge i 13 cm di lunghezza, ed il peso di circa 21 grammi.Ha un canto melodioso, distinto da diverse note metalliche.In genere nidifica sui cespugli nei pressi di corsi d'acqua, deponendo 4-6 uova, per due covate annuali. l'incubazione delle uova dura 13 giorni, i piccoli già dopo 15 giorni sono pronti per l'involo, ma per il completo svezzamento di dovrà attendere ancora un paio di settimane.Molto utilizzato in allevamenti amatoriali, per l'ibridazione con il canarino, e con il Cardinalino del Venezuela.
