Lo storno superbo (Lamprotornis superbus Rüppell, 1845) è un uccello della famiglia degli Sturnidi e appartenente al grande ordine dei Passeriformes; è molto diffuso in Africa. Gli adulti hanno la testa nera e la schiena, la parte superiore del petto, ali e coda sono iridescenti. I colori iridescenti non sono prodotti da un pigmento ma dagli strati di cheratina. Questi strati riflettono solamente un determinato spettro di luce a un certo angolo, in particolare riflettono solo lunghezze d'onda corte. Muovendo le penne e quindi l'angolo di incidenza della luce si otterranno diversi colori. Il ventre è invece rosso-arancio, separato dal petto blu da una barra bianca, non presente o pallida nei sub-adulti. Il colore rossastro delle penne del ventre sono invece prodotte dai carotenoidi, i quali non vengono prodotti internamente ma assunti attraverso il cibo. Sono principalmente monogami, e più specificatamente vi è una coppia riproduttiva aiutata dagli altri membri del gruppo che fungono da “helper” nella cura parentale e nella costruzione del nido, in quello che viene definito “cooperative breeding”.
