La fontana è addossata al muro che separa via Giulia dal Lungotevere, non lontano dal prospetto posteriore di palazzo Farnese. Venne realizzata - presumibilmente nel secondo quarto del XVII secolo - a spese dei Farnese (come dimostrerebbe il giglio del coronamento) da Girolamo Rainaldi (1570-1655), lo stesso architetto che in quegli anni realizzava le fontane gemelle su piazza Farnese. Già nel 1570 la “Congregazione sopra le fonti” aveva destinato una fontana alla “Strada Giulia” (la via aperta all'inizio del Cinquecento da papa Giulio II) e ne aveva prevista l'alimentazione con l'acqua Vergine. Tuttavia fu necessario attendere la canalizzazione dell'acqua Paola (1612) per garantire la nascita dell'opera. La fontana, originariamente isolata al centro di un piccolo slargo, che ospitò nel 1660 un teatro all'aperto (il muro retrostante fu edificato infatti alla fine dell'Ottocento), è composta da una antica vasca termale in granito, collocata al centro di un bacino leggermente incassato nel livello stradale e lastricato con frammenti di marmi policromi. Il fondale della vasca è costituito da un prospetto marmoreo, coronato da un giglio in metallo; al centro si trova il celebre mascherone antico che versa l'acqua. Autore: Girolamo Rainaldi (attr.). Datazione: XVII secolo (secondo quarto). Materiali: granito bigio, marmo bianco, travertino, metallo. Alimentazione originaria: acquedotto Paolo. Rione: Regola.
