La Sacra di San Michele, imponente complesso architettonico religioso di epoca romanica fu fondata intorno al 1000 d. C., è il monumento simbolo della Regione Piemonte dal 1994. Sorta come abbazia benedettina, è uno dei più antichi luoghi di culto dedicati all'Arcangelo Michele, i padri Rosminiani ne sono gli attuali custodi. Dall'oriente il culto dell'Arcangelo si diffuse e si sviluppò nelle regioni mediterranee in particolare in Italia, dove giunse assieme all'espansione del cristianesimo. Nel V secolo sul promontorio del Gargano sorse il più antico e più famoso luogo di culto micaelico dell'occidente, il Santuario di San Michele a Monte Sant'Angelo. Il culto di San Michele approdò in Val di Susa nei secoli V o VI, l'abbazia fu ubicata in uno scenario altamente suggestivo e richiama i due insediamenti micaelici del Gargano e della Normandia. Fondata sullo sperone roccioso del monte Pirchiriano si trova al centro di una via di pellegrinaggio di oltre duemila chilometri che unisce quasi tutta l'Europa occidentale da Mont-Saint-Michel a Monte Sant'Angelo. Di notevole pregio i capitelli storici e simbolici: Caino e Abele.
