La Phragmatobia fuliginosa è un lepidottero appartenente alla famiglia Erebidae, copie due generazioni all'anno che si susseguono dalla primavera fino all'autunno. Per attirare le femmine i maschi emettono dei particolari feromoni, prodotti da apposite ghiandole contenute in degli organi posizionati nella parte posteriore del corpo, chiamati coremata. Quando emettono i feromoni, questi organi dalla colorazione gialla fuoriescono dal corpo e sono ben visibili. Le loro dimensioni aumentano grazie agli alcaloidi pirrolizidinici, delle sostanze vegetali che si trovano in numerose specie di piante. Più i bruchi assimilano queste sostanze, più gli organi sono grandi. Le femmine depongono le uova, dal colore giallo chiaro, a piccoli gruppi sulle foglie e sui rami delle numerose piante nutrici. I bruchi mangiano le foglie delle piante appartenenti alla famiglia Asteraceae, apprezzano molto anche quelle delle colture e degli alberi nel mio orto, piselli, zucche, melo, pero, pruno e ciliegio. Dopo circa 10 giorni avviene la schiusa e i piccoli bruchi iniziano subito a nutrirsi, hanno abitudini notturne e crepuscolari, restano nascosti sotto le foglie nelle ore soleggiate. Crescono in circa un mese, effettuando diverse mute fino a raggiungere i 4cm di lunghezza. Appena nati sono giallo chiaro con piccoli puntini scuri, dopo la seconda muta iniziano a comparire dei folti peli su tutto il corpo e la colorazione diventa marrone chiaro o scuro con una striscia gialla sul dorso. Diventati adulti costruiscono tra la vegetazione un riparo trasparente di seta dalla forma ovale ricoperto dai suoi peli, all'interno del quale si trasformano in crisalide, dalla colorazione marrone. I bruchi che nascono in estate compiono la metamorfosi in circa due settimane, gli esemplari che diventano adulti in autunno restano tutto l'inverno nella crisalide, pronti ad iniziare un nuovo ciclo l'anno successivo. Le farfalle hanno abitudini notturne e possono essere chiamate falene, misurano circa 2cm e l'apertura alare può raggiungere i 4cm. Tutto il corpo è ricoperto da peli rossi o arancioni, le ali anteriori sono rosso scuro con due piccole macchie nere nella parte centrale, le ali posteriori sono rosso chiaro con macchie nere all'estremità. La grandezza e il numero delle macchie varia per ogni esemplare. Le femmine hanno l'addome più grande dei maschi e le antenne filiformi, quelle dei maschi invece sono pettinate. Ogni anno allevo almeno 40 esemplari, incontro sempre i bruchi durante le mie esplorazioni notturne mentre mangiano velocemente le foglie. Quella notte di fine luglio sono nate 6 falene, quando ho aperto il contenitore sono volate subito via ad eccezione questa femmina, che è rimasta aggrappata alla mia mano per molto tempo. Sono riuscito delicatamente ad invogliarla a posarsi su un rametto secco del suo stesso colore, non è stato facile perché voleva restare sempre sulla mia mano, poi si è aggrappata in questa simpatica posizione. C'era un leggero vento che rendeva difficile fotografare ma lei è stata molto collaborativa, sono rimasto ad osservarla per più di un'ora e poi l'ho portata nel prato per farla volare alla ricerca del nettare dei tanti fiori notturni.
