2200 anni fa, quando i fotoni di luce hanno lasciato questa nebulosa per arrivare fino a noi, le Terra era decisamente un altro posto. La macchina del tempo cosmica, il telescopio, questa volta è stata puntata verso la costellazione del Cigno, pià precisamente verso Sh2-119. Gas e polveri avvolgono la stella principale, 68-Cygni essendo la maggiore responsabile della ionizzazione dei gas attorno ad essa. Questa ionizzazione rende i gas tutti colorati a diverse lunghezze d'onda, dal blu al verde passndo per tutte le sfumature del marrone e arancione. I filamenti di nebulosa oscura in alto, contrastano fortemente sia con il chiarore della nebulosa che con il ricco campo pieno di stelle di sottofondo. Questi filamenti sono nubi contenenti in gran maggioranza gas (idrogeno ed elio) ed una minima frazione di polvere (circa l'1%), responsabile dell'aspetto della nube. Queste polveri, seppur minime, assorbono la luce rendendo appunto la nebulosa completamente oscura. Sh2-119 è una firma celeste di un'antichissima esplosione che ha rilasciato nell'universo gas e polveri formando nuove stelle e pianeti. L'effetto seta della nebulosa fa pensare ad un candido cuscino colorato in un letto di stelle, ma, lì, tra quelle polveri, stelle e pianeti sono in formazione in processi tra i più violenti e distruttivi. La foto è frutto di una collaborazione tra Pineta1984 e Luca Barcaro (Astrodivers). La foto è un mosaico di varie pose per un totale di circa 23 ore di luce.
