La Misumena vatia è una specie di ragno della famiglia Thomisidae, vengono chiamati anche ragni granchio o ragni dei fiori per le loro caratteristiche. Possiedono 8 zampe: le prime 4, essenziali per la caccia, sono più lunghe e robuste, piegate in avanti come le chele dei granchi; le altre sono più piccole e vengono usate solo per camminare, di lato e anche all'indietro. Sulle zampe sono posizionati i tricobotri, dei particolari peli sensori di colore marrone che percepiscono ogni movimento, in questo modo possono sentire molto bene le prede ed eventuali pericoli. Anche gli occhi sono 8, posizionati in due file da 4 che gli consentono una vista eccellente da tutti i lati. Come altre specie della famiglia Thomisidae, questi ragni non costruiscono la tela ma tendono agguati sia di giorno che di notte agli insetti di cui si nutrono: varie specie di mosche, api, farfalle, falene e cavallette. Si appostano tra la vegetazione, soprattutto sui fiori, aspettando con molta pazienza le prede. Le femmine possono modificare i pigmenti del proprio corpo e cambiare la colorazione per mimetizzarsi meglio con il fiore su cui si nascondono. Questo stratagemma, chiamato mimetismo criptico, serve per migliorare la caccia e non essere visto dalla preda; sono necessari alcuni giorni per adattarsi al colore del fiore e far comparire sul corpo nuove tonalità. La nuova colorazione è sempre più scura della precedente, gli esemplari bianchi quindi sono sempre i più giovani. Durante le mie esplorazioni ho osservato esemplari bianchi, gialli e verdi, a volte avevano delle macchie più scure sull'addome. I maschi sono marroni e non potendo cambiare colore rimangono nascosti tra la vegetazione più bassa. Quando una preda si posa vicino al loro nascondiglio, si avvicinano lentamente e scattano all'improvviso effettuando un attacco frontale, la afferrano con le quattro lunghe zampe per non farla scappare e la mordono sulla testa o sul collo iniettandole un veleno paralizzante, abbastanza potente da uccidere animali molto più grandi di loro. Questo tipo di attacco risulta estremamente efficace, nessuna preda riesce a divincolarsi e a volare via quando è stretta tra le loro zampe. Il suo ciclo vitale inizia in estate, i maschi salgono sulle femmine, molto più grandi di loro, e iniziano gli accoppiamenti, che durano pochi minuti. A differenza di altri ragni, le femmine non hanno un comportamento aggressivo e non mangiano i maschi dopo l'accoppiamento, i quali dopo qualche giorno vanno alla ricerca di altre femmine. In seguito le femmine costruiscono tra le foglie un resistente involucro di seta, chiamato ovisacco, e vi depongono circa 100 uova. Restano sempre sull'ovisacco per proteggerlo dai pericoli fino alla schiusa, che avviene dopo circa un mese. Durante questo periodo non si allontanano nemmeno per cacciare e muoiono pochi giorni dopo la nascita dei piccoli. La protezione delle uova è importantissima: alcuni insetti della famiglia Ichneumonidae attaccano gli ovisacchi abbandonati e vi depongono un uovo all'interno, la larva durante la crescita mangia tutte le uova dei ragni e compie la metamorfosi. I ragni appena nati misurano 1mm e sono tutti bianchi, restano sempre in gruppo vicino al nido nutrendosi con i gusci delle loro uova e i resti dell'ovisacco, quando una preda si avvicina la attaccano in gruppo. Dopo la seconda muta, nelle ore più calde della giornata, salgono sulla parte più alta della pianta, secernono dei sottilissimi fili e si aggrappano all'estremità, lasciandosi trasportare dal vento verso altri fiori. In autunno raggiungono la lunghezza di 5 mm, trascorrono l'inverno nascondendosi tra la vegetazione o in piccole buche nel terreno, crescendo compiono altre mute, durante le quali sviluppano le caratteristiche degli adulti e si liberano dello strato superficiale della pelle. Questo periodo è molto difficile per la loro sopravvivenza: gli uccelli, loro principali predatori, sono sempre in agguato. Gli esemplari che sopravvivono diventano adulti tra la fine della primavera e l'inizio dell'estate, pronti per iniziare un nuovo ciclo. Le femmine vivono 1 anno e raggiungono il cm di lunghezza mentre il maschio, che vive circa 11 mesi, non supera i 5 mm. Le mie esplorazioni notturne sono finite, le notti sono sempre più umide e fredde, il vento mi impedisce di fotografare e non voglio disturbare gli animali mentre si preparano ad affrontare l'inverno. Sto incominciando piano piano ad organizzare nel mio archivio le oltre 80.000 foto scattate in questi mesi, un impegno che necessita di moltissimo tempo. In una notte di inizio settembre ho incontrato questo grande esemplare femmina che stava lentamente mangiando una falena, nonostante il vento che muoveva di continuo la vegetazione. Sono rimasto ad osservarla per 3 ore riuscendo a fotografare solo durante i pochi attimi con assenza di vento.
